TO: Southwest District IE Speech Coaches
Welcome to Nevada High School and 2019 State Individual Events Contest for the Southwest District. It will be held in the Nevada High Schools on Saturday, March 9. The make-up date will be on Wednesday, March 13th starting at 3:45 p.m.
1. Parking for school buses will be in the parking lot at SCORE Park by the swimming pool and soccer fields off of 19th street due to snow build up at our usual place. Shuttle is available for bus drivers, please check in main office for details. Parent and other visitor parking will be in the south high school parking lot. Students may be dropped off at the south circle drive doors. Please tell your students to inform their families where to park. Only south circle drive doors will be opened. All other doors will be locked.
2. All information will be available at nevadaindividualspeechcontest.weebly.com
3. The District Schedule will be posted on the website. Our goal is to have it completed by Sunday, March 3rd. We will try to resolve conflicts, but will probably miss some. Email is the best way to reach either of us: [email protected] or [email protected] If there are any problems, you can also call us at school at 515-382-3521 ext. 323.
4. Please remind your parents that there is a $3.00 suggested donation for parents, guests, and non-performing students.
5. When you arrive at Nevada High School, please check in at the Main Office (just to the right of the main entry doors). We would like to meet you and make sure that we have everything that we need from you. We also would like one coaches’ cell phone number in case issues arise during the contest day.
6. If there are advance drops from the District Contest, please let us know by Wednesday, March 4. We will not schedule those performers. Otherwise, if you are making changes in the TITLES or AUTHORS from the registration cards, please notify us by Tuesday, March 10. We will make changes on the program and on the judges' ballots, only if we know. If you have questions about the schedule, please email us right away. Do not wait until the Friday before contest. We will run judges' ballots early on Friday morning.
7. As you know, this is a critic/judge type of contest. If you desire written comments, the student must hand the room chairperson three (3) comment sheets before each performance and have the top portion completed. A rating will be still given if there is no comment sheet. The completed comment sheets may be picked up by the school’s coach in the Main Office as soon as the last of the school’s contestants are finished performing and their sections have been posted. If you want comments sheets mailed to you, you must leave a stamped, self-addressed envelope at the office. Comment sheets may be purchased at the office for 50¢ each or three for $1.00, but all schools are encouraged to supply their own.
8. There will be a Judges’ Meeting in the Middle School Cafeteria at 7:00 a.m. The Family and Consumer Science rooms will be reserved for Judges.
9. Please duplicate the program on the website for your students. A very limited number of programs will be available in the lobby for parents and other speech spectators for a small fee.
10. Throughout the day, there will be students located throughout the building to assist with directions, questions, and noise control. Direct questions to them and inform your students of their purpose.
11. Ratings will be posted in the Foyer area as they become available. Please do not ask in the office when a section will be posted. Our office helpers will post rating as quickly as possible. If ratings have not been posted in a timely fashion and it is obvious that the center was completed, check with us. We may have mixed it up and not posted it.
12. The high school gymnasium, will be open for students to leave coats, bags, etc. during the day. Students can lounge in this area, however NO FOOD AND DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM. The Commons area and the entry foyer area will also be available for students to lounge and eat.
13. Food (pizza, snacks, pop, etc.) will be sold in concession stands in the foyer area and kitchen. Please encourage your students to support our fundraising efforts by patronizing our speech concessions. We will have a wide range of food offerings. See concession stand tab for what will be served. FOOD AND DRINK MUST REMAIN IN THE COMMONS (lunchroom) AREA OR THE FOYER AREA. NO FOOD OR POP WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE GYM, HALLWAYS, OR PERFORMANCE ROOMS. Please stress this to your students. Our janitorial staff will very much appreciate the clean school left behind by all our visitors if food and drink remain in the commons or foyer area during the day. A list of concessions available on our website.
14. Encourage your students to be very careful about noise in the hallways and commons. Please tell your students to behave with decorum at all times. Students may not play radios, iPods, laptops, MP3 Players, or CD players unless they use headphones. Our students respect our school facilities, and we expect that of our visitors as well.
15. During the day, coaches are encouraged to help “patrol” the areas where the students are located, including the gym, commons, and hallways.
